Mist

Designed in Halo: Reach’s Forge editor, this is a small scale 4v4 Slayer and Capture the Flag map. The map has two floors with a focus on power weapon management and fast-paced engagements.

Walkthrough

Mist is a map that is primarily separated into an upper and lower floor. The top floor contains an energy sword, and the bottom floor holds a rocket launcher. Players can choose to approach the map from a number of ways to navigate to power weapons. As one of my inital serious attempts at level design, there are still some serious flaws in my map including spawn visibility and overall map space.

Despite that, I am still happy with the number of ways I was able utilize the golden triangle of Halo: Guns, Grenades, and Melee. Creating spaces that you can use for cover from gunfire but enables uses for grenade bounces is key to creating fun and competitive map control.

Challenges and Learnings

Challenges: When designing the map, controlling player movement without feeling too compact was difficult. After some testing and feedback, the consenseus was that there wasn’t enough spawn locations and movement options. I added two additional areas for players to spawn at and jump down from the sniper bridges, allowing for more movement options around the map.

Learnings: This was my first map that I learned I needed to incorporate more areas that were safe spawns. While the lower platforms under the sniper made for additional spawn space, they provided no option for players to leave. If I were to go back and fix this, I’d add additional cover and another walkway towards the respective base, along with a gravity lift so players can go up to the sniper spawn.
